Quick Tips on How to Cat-Proof Your Home

Moving to a new home or bringing home a new kitty from an adoption location takes some preparation. The first thing on your list should be to make your home cat-friendly. Here are some tips to help you cat-proof your home:

  •  Make sure trash cans are out of reach. Putting lids on already existing receptacles or placing cans inside cupboards will ensure your cat does not play with potentially toxic or harmful items and accidentally ingest them.
  • Some plants and flowers are poisonous to cats, such as Amaryllis, Lilies, Tulips, Narcissus bulbs and English Ivy, to name a few. Even non-poisonous plants can be tough on your kitty’s stomach; therefore, make sure plants and flowers are placed out of your cat’s reach. For a complete list of toxic and non-toxic plants, visit the ASPCA website.
  • Cats love to hide, and one of their favourite places is under reclining chairs. If you are relaxing with your feet up, check under the chair before pulling the foot rest back down.
  • Secure all windows with screens, especially if you are on a high floor, to ensure there are no ways for your cat to escape or fall out of the window. Cats are very curious by nature and love to observe the outside world. Contrary to popular belief, cats don’t always land on their feet and don’t have nine lives.
  • Place the litter box in a quiet place so your cat can do his business in peace. Cats may experience anxiety if their litter box is beside something loud like a washer or dryer. Privacy is key to minimize the risk of accidents.
  • If you have small children, gradually integrate your new kitten or cat without overwhelming anyone. Teaching your children how to properly pet and care for the cat can be a great experience if everyone is calm and gentle.

And don’t forget to give your new furry family member fun toys to play with and have some cat treats handy – this will keep your kitty content in his new home.
